![]() ![]() For one, there is A LOT of racism in the book. Turns out they are very different, which I guess is to be expected from a version written in the 1930s and another written in 2020. And as I watched it, I became more interested in reading the novel. His name is John, and having been raised outside of the carefully curated society in London, he brings his ideas of monogamy, love, and autonomy to London, which some find fascinating and others find inspiring.Īnyway, that’s the mini-series. They all fall under the main values of the society: “Everyone belongs to everyone else,” and “Everybody happy now!” To achieve the latter, all citizens are dosed with “soma,” a mood-altering drug they take when they feel the slightest sense of unease.Įveryone is thrown off kilter when a “Savage” from the “Savage Lands” – kind of a theme park, but more based on the Christian Hell House idea where the various sins and terrible things are on display to reinforce how much better things are now – is brought back to London. There are many rules: no monogamy, required parties and orgies, respecting the hierarchy. And the rest of the people do the more menial work, the work being less and less prestigious as you work your way down the alphabet. Betas do much of the important work and are bred specifically to be sexually alluring and enticing for other Betas and Alphas. The mini-series stars Jessica Brown Findlay (Lady Sybil from Downton Abbey ), Harry Lloyd (Viserys Targaryen from GOT ), and Alden Ehrenreich (Young Han Solo from Solo ), and it tells the story of a “utopic” future London where everyone is genetically engineered to serve specific purposes which corresponds with their status as Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Epsilon. So when I found a Brave New World mini-series, I thought I’d check it out. 1984 by George Orwell was one of my favorite books as an adolescent, and Brave New World is often mentioned in the same breath. It creates a great sense of dehumanization to the people being controlled in World State.I’ve been curious about this book for a long time. Although it may seem like a fairytale to live a life in peace because everything you do is controlled by the government, it does not. Social Stability is not worth the price, it gives satisfaction to those who benefit off it and to the ones that aren’t living a miserable life. It erases a person’s self and its replaced with a manmade concept and way of thinking. Overall world states citizens or anyone do not benefit from social stability. Citizens being enlightened to anything dealing with knowledge of the past menaces the government. This quote proposes that science can enlighten the people of this society to learn content that does not convenience anyones happiness which is stability. ![]() Science is dangerous we have to keep it most carefully chained and muzzled.”” says Mustapha Mond. “”It isn’t only art that’s incompatible with happiness it’s also science. The government of World State agrees with this because if they have knowledge of the past the society will rebel because they will see the difference of life then and what they are living now. Stability is what World State wants and why their so controlling, it all started with Henry Ford saying History is bunk. This creates an oblivious society of people who are paying the price of something that is not worth it. World state is supposedly protecting and stabilizing the society, however they are dehumanizing their people because they are afraid of them having their own identity. The government used techniques like hypnotherapy to get the citizens to act how they want them to. They have no sense of self identity or any knowledge of what it means to act or think for themselves because being told what to do is all they know. They each are taught how to act, think, feel, and speak. They are categorized by Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Epsilon. ![]() A system like World States does not benefit the community as they think it does, it benefits those who control the system.įrom the start of the book we see how everyone has a predestined life for them. It makes the people believe they are all benefiting off their category given to them, but we then see unreasonable side of it all. This quote exemplifies the importance community has to the people of World State. ![]() When Lenina says, Everyone works for everyone else, we can do it without anyone. Everything and everyone belong to each other, nobody really has privacy. We see this when they are first born, nothing is ever done alone. The idea of community portrayed in World State spreads the idea that everyone is one and should act as one. “Community, Identity and Stability in Brave New World” ![]()
